Bulldog's Breakfast

Theresa May is in a much simpler situation than Jeremy Corbyn.

He is pretty much a Leaver, and he is surrounded by overt Leavers, but he sits for a Remain constituency. Meanwhile, many Labour MPs are Remainers who sit for Leave constituencies that have just re-elected them with greatly increased majorities barely a year after having swung the referendum result for Leave. It is all very messy.

But she an overt Remainer, and she is surrounded by other overt Remainers, while Conservative MPs are mostly like her: Remainers who sit for Remain constituencies. That creates barely any mess at all. Thus, the most Eurofederalist Bill in British history is about to be proposed.

That Bill would make the acquis communautaire the law of the United Kingdom even after this country had ceased to have the slightest say over its content. Thus, it would turn the United Kingdom into a colony of the European Union.

In order to stop that from ever actually happening, however, the Brexit negotiations have been put in the hands of the erstwhile Government Whip on the Maastricht Bill. He is a man who, even if he has had a complete change of heart, is hopelessly out of his depth. He leads the domestic blather about "bulldog spirit" and some dead woman's handbag.

To no one's surprise, and in accordance with Mrs May's intentions, his immensely sophisticated opposite number is running rings around him. But then, who would be any better? Boris Johnson? Merely to ask that question answers it.
